The purpose of Karen's individual apprenticeship training is for the apprentice to develop a highly refined sensitivity and use of the body-mind unity as described by F. M. Alexander in his books, and to apply this process to teaching.

Each day consists of three hours of skill-based training. Each student will receive individual tuition from Karen as well as working with one or two other apprentices. The work includes practical and theorectical investigation of

1. the principles and movements involved in teaching;
2. the principles and movements of simple everyday activities.

Each day will also contain a half-hour lecture on anatomy and the teachings of Alexander.

During the course, the application of the Alexander Technique is applied to the following activities: voice, music, creative movement, acting, swimming, and juggling. The emphasis throughout the course is developing the apprentice's ability to explore his or her own use through performance and activities. Apprentices are required to work with each other. Home study is required.

Training as a teacher in the Alexander Technique is highly rewarding but requires discipline and commitment.

Prospective apprentices must be of good health, character and education. Teachers of the Technique will often work with people of widely differing ages, needs and interests, and so strong communication skills with a clear and friendly manner is essential.

Before applying prospective apprentices will have had a minimum of thirty individual lessons and will also have had some lessons with Karen. The first term is probationary, during which an apprentice’s suitability for the training can be assessed.

The course fees are £1,300 per term, payable termly, in advance, and are non-refundable.

Karen’s apprenticeship course fulfills the 1600-hours rule of many Alexander Technique teaching societies. It is therefore possible for graduates to apply for membership of various teaching societies. Please see links for more information.

You can download an application form in links. Application forms should be printed out and signed. Email applications are not accepted. To ensure individual attention Karen only trains a maximum of three apprentices. Early application is therefore recommended.
